Current industrial processes to produce 6-HNA are based either on non-specific, uneconomical chemical synthesis or on biosynthesis procedures in which degradation of 6-HNA is inhibited by a high concentration of nicotinic acid. We offer an alternative approach based upon genetic engineering leading to a microorganism capable of synthesizing 6-HNA but unable to degrade it. This allows a higher yield (approx. 100%) without the need to include additional substrate to act as inhibitor of 6-HNA degradation, thus reducing costs.
