CSIC TP004- Capillary column for enantiomer separation by gas chromatography.
A new chiral capillary column for enantiomer separation is proposed. It has a mixed stationary phase with specific properties, whose selectivity is different from the commercial columns based on permethyl-beta-cyclodextrin; its thermostability and durability are higher. It has a high chemical inertness, similar tho the best columns in the market, but it can be routinely used for a longer time.
Specification sheet:
DESCRIPTION

The columns consist of a fused silica tube, although they could be prepared by using other vitrous materials. The tube is externally covered with polyimide in order to prevent the tube to break. The lenght varies within 10 and 50 meters, and internal diameter is usually 0.2 or 0.3 mm, although it is available from 0.1 to 0.5 mm. The internal wall has been desactivated in order to increase the chemical inertness. After that, it has been coated with an homogeneous film of a mixed stationary phase based on permethyl-beta-cyclodextrin and a polysiloxane. The allowable temperature range is 140-230 °C, higher than most of commercial chiral columns. The column can be used to separate esters, alcohols, ketones, heterocycles, aromatic compounds, aminoacid derivatives and other.

INNOVATIVE ASPECTS

The main innovation are the type of phase and the deactivation treatment. Both change selectivity and improve column quality and practical use.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES

The column has a mixed stationary phase with specific properties; its selectivity is different from that of commercial columns based on permethyl-beta-cyclodextrin. Its thermostability and durability are higher. It has a satisfactory chemical inertness, similar to the best commercial columns, allowing the elution of free alcohols and other polar compounds.
