Data analysis methodology and tool for discovering patterns, regularities and dependencies in large databases of any kind of processes and systems. It combines classification and clustering procedures to discover properties and behaviours, which can be useful to improve the involved process or system.

DESCRIPTION

This technology allows the analysis of massive volumes of data that, due to their size and complexity, are impossible to process by the usual ways. The technology combines classification and clustering procedures. It uses an inductive learning algorithm to generate symbolic descriptions that can be easily understood. The system also generates a data dictionary for each problem that includes a description of the relevant parameters and any restriction that these may present. Finally, statistical techniques are applied in order to reject irrelevant data and objectively compare the significance of the patterns and relationships discovered.

This technology is being applied by Lucent Technologies for the yield enhancement of their integrated circuit manufacturing processes. It can also be applied in other cases, since their foundations are also valid for many other industrial and business problems.

INNOVATIVE ASPECTS

Data mining is the name of a new information technology. Our work is a particular implementation of this technology. It is based on statistical, artificial intelligence, representation and visualisation techniques. Some of its innovative aspects are the explicit use of prior knowledge, the discovery and employment of domain knowledge, the integration of statistical inference and machine learning and the automatic generation-test of hypothesis.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES

The developed technology allows to exploit the knowledge hidden in large databases of any kind of companies, institutions, laboratories, hospitals, etc. It avoids that the most of the data remain unused and the information they contain be wasted. The discovered knowledge can be used to explain what has happen, to make forecasts and to improve the involved process or activity.
