CSIC NM008- Mortar with biocide properties.
Development of a repair mortar with biocide properties, using for historic-artistic building restoration.
Specification sheet:
DESCRIPTION
When mortars are exposed to atmospheres with high humidity one of the main causes of their decay is the growth and development of microorganisms. Conventional mortars should, therefore, be replaced by others with such properties, which do not change the base material properties and must prevent the damage to be supported by the growth of microorganisms.
For this reason, a mortar with biocides properties, protected by patent, is developed. They have the physics, mechanics and mechanic-resistant properties of base material, besides biocides properties. In the same way, the addition of the clay with biocide doesn’t change the external appearance of the mortar, that is important in restoration buildings, mainly at Historic-Artistic Heritage buildings. Also, this mortar have been proved in atmospheres at high contaminant gases levels such as SO2 and NOx. These biocides properties are comming from the addition of a biocide including into a clay mineral (sepiolite) that has a high absorption/adsorption capacity with constancy of volume. So this mortar will keep their structure and properties even in constructions in contact with water.
The mortars described in the patent include a clay-like mineral which supports a biocide, in proportions that do not substantially modify the other properties of the mortars, but which prevent the growth and development of fungi, algae, lichens, etc. For this reason the clay mineral has to be included into the mortar between 2 or 10% of its proportion.
The biocide could be every chemical product which contain this biocide property, and because of its size and molecular struture can keep it into the clay support.
These mortars are used to repair ancient mosaics, which is necessary to resolve the biodeterioration problem (lime mortar), and in the civil construction where people can’t be in touch with them and the water or humit (cement mortars) are presented in it, where these conditions helps the growth of microorganism.
COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES
A conventional mortar with unmodified physical, mechanical and resistant properties which is resistant to microbial decay.
