CSIC AGRO001- New concentrate (from olive oil extraction process) for ruminants feeding
Zaidin Experimental Agricultural Station of CSIC has developed a concentrate feedstuff based on two products from the olive oil extraction: the dried and extracted olive cakes and the ashes produced during the burning of the mentioned olive cakes. The advantages are: new technology, new byproduct of vegetal origin, alternative source in areas of olive cultives, innovative ingredient. Collaboration sought: license agreement, financial support.
Specification sheet:
DESCRIPTION
The olive culture is concentrated on the Mediterranean Basin being Spain the first country concerning the surface (2,727,000 Ha, MAPA) and the number of productive trees (167,000,000, Barranco et al., 1997; MAPA). Both, olive culture and olive oil industrial extraction give big quantities of by-products that the accumulation can have negative effects on the environment. The reutilization and re-cycling of those by-products in animal feeding could have positive consequences on both, the development of animal production in areas where the natural resources of nutrients are scarce and on the environment.
By another hand, industrial procedure for oil extraction has recently been modified. Traditionally a three stages technology has been applied, which the by-products were wastewaters (“alpechines”) and olive cakes. From about last 6 years, a new technology is being applied, called “two-stage” extraction that gives oil and a by-product, which includes pulp, peels, stones and wastewater (Espuny Rodriguez, 1997; Artacho del Pino, 1997). This new technology is considered to have ecological advantages when compared with traditional of three stages as it uses less water and produces lower amount of wastewaters, which have a high pollutant power. But it produces a very big amount (around 2,000,000 Kg/year only in Andalusia) of a by-product called “two stages olive cake”. This by-product is been characterized in relation to its ability to be used in ruminants feeding by our group. Also an important contribution of our group has been done regarding “three stages technology’s by-products” (Molina et al., 1984; Nefzaoui et al., 1985; Aguilera and Molina, 1985, 1986, 1988; Aguilera et al., 1992). An optimal utilization of those sources of nutrients could have some advantages as it could contribute to the reduction of environmental pollution. Moreover, it might increase the availability of nutrient sources for livestock in semiarid lands, which is of special importance in drought periods. Additionally, the vegetal origin of those by-products could be of special interest for the health of the animal and the one of the consumers.
INNOVATIVE ASPECTS
This proposal involves several innovative aspects:
- The two stages dried and extracted olive cake is a new by-product, from a new technology
- The utilisation of the ashes from the burning of the two stages olive cake as an ingredient of the mineral-vitamin mixtures for animal feeding is an innovative aspect by itself
COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES
Several are the competitive advantages of the present proposal:
- It increases the availability of alternative sources of feedstuff for livestock in areas of olive culture which, in the whole Mediterranean countries, have limited availability of pastures and conventional resources.
- The by-products that their use in animal feeding is proposed are of vegetal origin
and they may be an alternative to the use of animal by-products.
