CSIC AGRO047 - Studies of biological activity using animal models and clinical assays
A Research group from Spanish public organisation, with research experience in bioactive substances and functional foods, has the capacity to study the biological activity of those substances and nutraceutic components in vivo, by means of using cellular culture, animal models and clinical assays. Companies producing functional foods and ingredients, or nutraceutic, compounds interested in assaying the bioactivity of their products are sought for technical cooperation agreements
Specification sheet:
DESCRIPTION

A research group from a Spanish public organisation has a wide research experience in the study and characterisation of bioactive substances and other food constituents as well as the development of functional foods. The bioactive substances are natural components of foods, generally from vegetable origin, an intake of which has a health promoting effect, either by its antioxidant activity, or protective against cardiovascular diseases or certain kinds of cancer. However, although there is a lot of information concerning the development of functional food containing bioactive substances, in many cases the in vivo activity of the substances is unknown, neither if they are totally or partially metabolised, what substances are derived from their metabolism o how they are absorbed, in fact their real activity in vivo.

With the aim to be able to answer these questions the research group has developed in vivo systems for the assays of the biological activity of these substances, by means of using cellular culture, animal models and clinical assays. Besides, a laboratory model of the human digestive track has been built to study the digestive processes of foods and their components once they are intake. Using these technologies it is possible to determine the digestive process of bioactive substances, of functional foods and ingredients and nutraceutic supplements, which metabolites they produce, their biological activity in vivo and their possible relation with health.

The research group is interested in contacting food companies and others producing functional foods or ingredients, as well as nutraceutic supplements interested in showing the biological activity of their products in vivo for technical cooperation agreements

INNOVATIVE ASPECTS

The implemented systems to assay the biological activity of bioactive substances in vivo, allow showing the bioactivity of functional foods and ingredients, as well as of nutraceutic supplements with bioactive substances. Companies using this service would have scientific evidence of the biological activity of their products according with the new European rules on this matter
